This week’s class activities involved a lot of practice with the interview process of patients. The first initial class activity was to create questions that would be asked of the elderly population. It was insightful to see what the other group of classmates would come up with and have a discussion about what techniques work well and which don’t.
The second activity that worked on the interview process again was the role playing activity. Being a patient in the scenario allowed me to view the case manager and identify what worked well with me in order to answer questions as the patient.
Along with the role playing and putting our CM hats on for the interviewing process, we also were introduced to the CM SBAR. It seemed challenging due to the fact that you want to cover all information about a patient but then also make sure that the document is succinct to the point where health care providers can keep focus on the patient information. However, after going a few rounds listening to the different groups’ SBAR, I can see how with practice it will all come together.
I know a lot of things get better with practice. However, I was skeptical of this idea when entering the Nursing field. With processes that are repetitive, practice seemed to make things easier after a while but with the Nursing field since we are working with such diverse populations, I was worried about whether or not it would ever get easier. But with practicing similar processes and applying them to the diverse populations, it does seem more possible during our time in school and continual practicing.
